Kraft Paper: From Virgin Pulp to Recycled Board, Strength in Every Fiber

Created on 05.27
Kraft paper is a humble yet resilient traveler in the world of packaging, distinguished by its unique brownish hue and exceptional physical strength, occupying an irreplaceable position within the paper family. Manufactured primarily from sulfate wood pulp through the kraft pulping process, its fibers suffer minimal damage and retain considerable length, resulting in finished paper with outstanding tensile strength, burst resistance, and tear resistance, while simultaneously displaying the warm coloration and rugged texture characteristic of natural wood pulp.

The world of kraft paper is far from monochromatic. Depending on raw material formulations and intended applications, it diverges into two distinctly different product lines, each serving specific packaging requirements. The first is 100% virgin wood pulp premium kraft paper, a product line that maintains absolute purity in its wood pulp pedigree, utilizing native softwood or hardwood sulfate pulp throughout every layer from surface to core without any incorporation of recycled fibers. This premium kraft paper exhibits uniform and full-bodied coloration, tightly bonded fibers, and moderate surface smoothness, preserving the signature natural texture of kraft paper while offering excellent printability. It is particularly well-suited for manufacturing high-end carrier bags, document envelopes, mailing envelopes, book covers, and floral wrapping paper. In terms of grammage, premium kraft paper typically spans a range from 40 to 120 grams per square meter, with the lightest variants as delicate as cicada wings, suitable for lightweight bags, food pouches, or floral wrapping; the heavier grades possess sufficient rigidity and structure, becoming the material of choice for branded boutique carrier bags after lamination or embossing treatments.

The second product line is kraft board, which differs from premium kraft paper in that its raw materials incorporate a certain proportion of recycled waste paper pulp, with the core layer and even the back layer potentially composed entirely of recycled fibers, retaining wood pulp only in the surface layer to ensure acceptable appearance. This formulation design significantly reduces production costs while compensating for the strength decline of recycled fibers through increased grammage. Consequently, kraft board typically starts at 200 grams per square meter, with heavier grades reaching 450 or even 500 grams, trading thickness for stiffness and weight for compressive performance. Kraft board exhibits deeper coloration, rougher texture, and distinctly visible recycled fiber characteristics. While its whiteness and printing precision cannot match those of premium kraft paper, its cost advantages and environmental credentials are remarkably prominent. Heavyweight kraft board finds extensive application in heavy-duty cartons, industrial packaging, archive boxes, notebook covers, shoe boxes, liquor outer cases, and logistics packaging requiring load-bearing capacity and stackability, with its thick and tough properties effectively protecting contents from compression damage during transportation and warehousing.

Whether the light and flexible premium kraft paper or the heavy and substantial kraft board, each interprets the essential function of packaging—protection and containment—in its own manner. Premium kraft paper adds warmth and trust to brands through its natural texture and food-grade safety; kraft board provides reliable logistics assurance for bulk commodities through its pragmatic strength and accessible cost. Faced with increasingly diversified packaging demands, the kraft paper family continues writing its own chapter of value through its rustic character and resilient core.
