Duplex Board: Cost-Effective Packaging Solutions for Global Markets

Created on 05.26
Whiteboard paper, also known as duplex board or folding box board, is one of the most widely used paperboard materials in the packaging industry. It is manufactured primarily from recycled waste paper pulp or semi-chemical pulp through a multi-layer composite process, typically consisting of three structural layers: the top layer, the core layer, and the back layer. The top layer utilizes bleached chemical pulp or semi-bleached pulp, presenting a white or light-colored surface that provides an excellent foundation for printing; the core and back layers incorporate substantial amounts of recycled waste paper pulp or mechanical pulp to reduce costs while imparting sufficient stiffness and thickness to the board. This structural design achieves an outstanding balance between performance and cost-effectiveness.

Whiteboard paper offers a relatively broad grammage range, generally spanning from 200 to 500 grams per square meter, with ample thickness, excellent stiffness, and favorable compressive strength and folding endurance. Its surface undergoes appropriate treatment to achieve moderate smoothness, capable of meeting the basic requirements of various printing methods including offset and flexographic printing, with reasonably accurate color reproduction and acceptable graphic clarity. While its whiteness and gloss cannot match those of virgin wood pulp-based white cardboard, it proves more than adequate for the majority of mid-range packaging applications. Another significant characteristic of whiteboard paper is its pronounced cost advantage; since the core and back layers utilize substantial quantities of recycled fibers, its raw material cost remains considerably lower than all-wood pulp products, making it the preferred material for packaging solutions that prioritize cost-performance ratio.

In terms of application scope, whiteboard paper can be found in virtually every corner of daily life. In the personal care and household sector, it is extensively used for detergent boxes, toothpaste cartons, soap wrappers, and shampoo gift sets, balancing protective functionality with display appeal. For electronics packaging, color boxes for mid-to-low-end home appliances, toys, stationery, and mobile accessories frequently employ whiteboard paper to achieve necessary cushioning and protection at reasonable costs. In the apparel and footwear industry, shirt stiffeners, shoe boxes, hat boxes, and belt boxes universally utilize whiteboard paper to maintain structural rigidity while controlling packaging expenses. Within the tobacco, alcohol, and gift sector, ordinary cigarette cartons, liquor outer cases, and tea gift box intermediate packaging commonly adopt whiteboard paper, enhancing perceived value through lamination and hot stamping processes. For general merchandise, cosmetic set outer boxes, kitchenware packaging cartons, and household product color cases similarly rely on whiteboard paper support. Additionally, whiteboard paper is frequently employed for file folders, archive boxes, notebook covers, picture frame backings, and puzzle boards, with its extensive range of applications making it an indispensable member of the paperboard packaging family.
Whiteboard paper can be categorized into two primary types based on top layer whiteness and coating treatment: gray-back whiteboard paper and white-back whiteboard paper. Gray-back whiteboard paper features a gray-colored back layer, offering the lowest cost and typically utilized for ordinary commodities where inner packaging appearance requirements are minimal. White-back whiteboard paper undergoes bleaching treatment on the back layer, achieving higher overall whiteness and a cleaner appearance, suitable for color box packaging where aesthetic standards are more demanding. Coated whiteboard paper receives surface coating treatment on the top layer, resulting in a smoother and more delicate surface with significantly enhanced printability, capable of satisfying higher-precision color printing requirements and commonly selected for mid-to-high-end commodity packaging.
