When colour, detail, and finish all need to be exactly right

The paper that makes colour come alive

There are moments in print where nothing less than the sharpest detail, the most accurate colour, and the most polished finish will do. A product catalogue that needs to stop a buyer mid-scroll. A brand brochure that has to convey quality before a single word is read. A poster that has to hold its own from across a room. In all of these moments, the paper underneath the ink is not a background decision — it is a defining one. And the paper most consistently chosen for these demands is art paper, known in the industry as C2S coated paper or 双铜纸 (shuāng tóng zhǐ).

What gives it its edge

Art paper is produced by applying one or more layers of mineral coating — typically a blend of kaolin clay and calcium carbonate — to both sides of a paper base. This coating fills the microscopic surface irregularities of the base sheet, creating an exceptionally smooth, even printing surface. The result is a paper that holds ink precisely at the surface rather than allowing it to absorb into the fibre, which produces sharper halftone dots, more saturated colour, crisper text edges, and finer reproduction of photographic and illustrative detail than almost any other uncoated or lightly treated paper can achieve.
The coating is also what gives art paper its characteristic brightness and sheen. Light reflects evenly off the smooth surface, making colours appear more vivid and images more three-dimensional. For any application where visual impact is the primary objective, this optical quality is not incidental — it is the whole point.
Art paper does one thing exceptionally well: it makes everything printed on it look its best. Sharp, vivid, polished — it is the substrate that turns a good design into a great impression.

Gloss and matte — two finishes, one family

Art paper is available in both gloss and matte coated variants, each suited to different visual intentions. Gloss coated delivers the highest colour saturation and the most reflective finish — ideal when images need to be vivid and striking, and when the polished, premium quality of the print is itself part of the brand message. Matte coated offers a softer, non-reflective surface that is easier on the eye for text-heavy content, and lends a quieter sense of sophistication that some premium brands actively prefer. Both variants share the same fundamental advantage of precise ink holdout and faithful colour reproduction; the choice between them is largely one of tone and intent.

Where art paper performs at its best

Commercial printing is the natural home of art paper. Corporate brochures, product catalogues, annual reports, and promotional leaflets — content where image quality and colour accuracy directly shape how a brand is perceived. A well-printed catalogue on quality art paper communicates investment and attention to detail in a way that no digital equivalent fully replicates. For brand managers and marketing teams, specifying the right coated paper is one of the most direct ways to control how print materials represent the brand.
Posters and display graphics are equally suited to art paper's strengths. Whether produced for retail environments, exhibitions, events, or outdoor advertising, large-format print demands a surface that renders photography and graphic design at full fidelity. Art paper's smooth coating and consistent ink absorption make it the standard substrate for high-impact visual display.
Packaging is another significant application. Premium folding cartons, product boxes, and retail packaging that carries detailed brand imagery or photography benefit from the colour accuracy and surface quality that art paper provides. Where a package needs to communicate luxury, precision, or visual richness — on a shelf, in a gift bag, or at the point of unboxing — a coated surface delivers what an uncoated one cannot.
Calendar and stationery printing rounds out the picture. Wall calendars, desk planners, and premium greeting cards rely on art paper for its ability to reproduce photographic imagery cleanly and consistently across large print runs, and for the tactile quality that makes a well-produced calendar feel like a considered object rather than a commodity.

Choosing the right grammage

Art paper is available from around 80gsm through to 250gsm and above, with grammage selection driven by the structural and tactile requirements of the application. Leaflets and insert sheets typically fall in the 80 to 105gsm range — light enough to fold cleanly, substantial enough to hold its shape. Brochure covers, posters, and packaging surfaces generally call for 128 to 157gsm, where the paper has enough body to convey quality in the hand. For premium covers, high-end packaging, and applications where thickness and weight are part of the intended impression, 200gsm and above is the appropriate range.
